From the Department Chair

Welcome to the Department of Astronomy at Harvard
University
, located within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

Our department is young in spirit but has a century-old tradition of exceptional graduate students and faculty. Our teaching and research interests span the entire Universe with exciting observational and theoretical programs in cosmology, extra-solar planets, transients, star formation, black holes and high-energy astrophysics.

We are delighted to have you visit our vibrant academic home!

Directions

The Astronomy Department has offices at 60 Garden Street and 160 Concord Avenue (M Building), Cambridge, MA.

Public Transportation

Harvard Station: The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics is about a half-mile and a 15-minute walk west of Harvard Square. Leave the Harvard Station by the Church Street exit, turn right on Massachusetts Ave., then left on Garden Street at the Cambridge Common. Bear right after the Sheraton-Commander Hotel, and the CfA is another two blocks on the left.

Porter Station: walk down Massachusetts Avenue back toward Harvard Square, 3 blocks, turn right on Linnaean Street and keep walking (6 blocks) straight on into the CfA's entrance driveway.

From the bus or trolley: Take the 74 or 78 bus or 72 trackless trolley from the lower level of Harvard Station and ask to be let off at Manassas Street.

From the Airport: Take the Silver Line to South Station. Transfer to the Redline Inbound train towards Alewife. Fare is $1.75 and you can pay with cash on the bus. Exit at either Porter Square or Harvard Square and follow directions above. There are taxi stands in Harvard Square.

Taxi fare from the airport to the CfA is $40-$50.

Note: On the MBTA trains Inbound means towards Park Street Station.

www.mbta.com.

By Car

From the northwest: Take Route 2 to the Alewife-Concord Rotary, follow Concord Avenue into Cambridge and cross Huron Avenue, turn left on Madison Street and then right into the CfA's rear parking lot.

From Boston or to the south: Take Storrow or Memorial Drives to the Harvard Square exit (JFK Street), continue through the Square and up Mass. Ave. to turn left at Linnaean Street, which intersects Garden Street right at the front entrance driveway of the CfA.

From the north: Take 93 South to Memorial Drive and follow directions from above. From the west: Take the Mass. Turnpike (US 90) to the Allston-Cambridge exit, cross the Charles River, and turn left on Memorial Drive immediately over the River Street Bridge. Then follow directions from above.

Parking

You may purchase a parking pass from the Harvard College Observatory business office if you want to park in the lot at 60 Garden Street during the day. The HCO business office is located at B-115. Parking is $4.00 for two hours, $8.00 for four hours, or $13.00 for all day.

If you are visiting 160 Concord Avenue you may purchase a parking pass from Muriel Hodges in room M-333. Passes are $7.00 for half day and $13.00 for full day.

Non-resident street parking is available on Huron Avenue and Sherman Street.

Fireman Fellowship (Graduate)

The gift of Rita S. Fireman to the Harvard College Observatory to establish the Edward L. Fireman Fellowship Fund "in memory of a man who loved his work as an experimental physicist. Then income from this fund is to be used both to conserve the principal and to provide support each year to a worthy graduate student. The funds are to be given at the discretion of the Chairman of the Department of Astronomy, preferably to a doctoral student engaged in experimental work in a field related to nuclear astrophysics. Each student receiving such supplementary funds is to be known as a Fireman Fellow. A biographical sketch on each Fireman Fellow will be provided to me and my children for as long as we so desire."

For Scientific Staff

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Lectures

The Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Lecture honors one of the great scientists of the 20th century. With her Ph.D. thesis on the abundance of the elements in stars, Payne-Gaposchkin began to invent observational astrophysics. Over the next five decades, her research covered many important issues in stellar astrophysics, including the evolution of binary and single stars, the structure of pulsating variables, the formation of O stars in the spiral arms of our galaxy, and sequential star formation in the Magellanic clouds. Her monographs inspired several generation of astronomers. And her popular books delighted readers with the wonders of the universe. The Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Lecture series was established in October 2000 during the centenary year of her birth. The goal of the series is to remember Payne-Gaposchkin by honoring a modern astrophysicist with broad accomplishments.
