DESCRIPTION:Douglas Finkbeiner will give a special seminar for the CfA <br>community on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 10:00, in the <strong>Phillips </strong><br><strong>Auditorium</strong>.  The title of this talk is "New Approaches to Discovering <br>Dark Matter."<br><br>ABSTRACT: <br><br>Most of my group's work in recent years has been related to <br>discovering the nature of dark matter.  Some projects<br>involve searches for WIMP signals from astrophysical sources or <br>direct detection experiments.  In other cases, we have studied the<br>distribution of dust and stars in the Milky Way, both for their own <br>sake, and as foregrounds for WIMP signals in microwaves and <br>gamma rays. I will focus on two aspects of this research:  our work <br>to build a better dust map in 2-D and 3-D using Pan-STARRs and <br>WISE, and our pursuit of a mysterious gamma-ray line near the <br>Galactic center.
