February 13, 2012

Avi Loeb was awarded the "Cattedra Galileiana" for the 2011-12 Academic Year at the Scoule Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy. He will give 4 lectures on Cosmology related to this award. The award was named after Galileo Galilei who was born in Pisa and served as chair of Mathematics at the University of Pisa. As the story goes, Galileo used the leaning tower of Pisa to drop balls of different masses and demonstrate that they reach the ground at the same time (contrary to what Aristotle said). Previous Galileo lecturers covered a wide range of topics in physics and mathematics.
