"New Approaches to Discovering Dark Matter," Doug Finbeiner, special seminar

Date:

Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 10:10am

Douglas Finkbeiner will give a special seminar for the CfA
community on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 10:00, in the Phillips
Auditorium.  The title of this talk is "New Approaches to Discovering
Dark Matter."

ABSTRACT:

Most of my group's work in recent years has been related to
discovering the nature of dark matter.  Some projects
involve searches for WIMP signals from astrophysical sources or
direct detection experiments.  In other cases, we have studied the
distribution of dust and stars in the Milky Way, both for their own
sake, and as foregrounds for WIMP signals in microwaves and
gamma rays. I will focus on two aspects of this research:  our work
to build a better dust map in 2-D and 3-D using Pan-STARRs and
WISE, and our pursuit of a mysterious gamma-ray line near the
Galactic center.
